Aliyah's Story - Words of Thanks - Light House Medical Director
Light House Medical Director
Donald Philgreen, M.D.
Over the years, the Light House has touched many lives, undergone many changes and has impacted the community. One constant blessing to the LIGHT House, has been the guidance and care of Donald E. Philgreen, MD. Dr. Philgreen became the medical director of the Light House when it began in 1985 and has continued to serve over the 21-plus years. For the past four years, he has also served on the LIGHT House Board of Directors.
Although his medical specialty is Family Medicine, his love for delivering babies (over 3000 now) and his strong belief in the value of human life made him the perfect choice when the LIGHT House began in 1985.
Dr. Philgreen is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute, Wheaton College, and University of Chicago (now Pritzker) School of Medicine. After his internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, he spent two years on the Gila River Indian Reservation in Arizona with the Public Health Service. Ottawa, Kansas, was his next stop where he developed a large family practice from 1970 to 1985. He was busy with work and with his personal commitments which included: his church, a Youth for Christ club in his home, Rotary, Jaycees, and the local school board. After fifteen years in Ottawa, God called Dr. Philgreen to the LIGHT House. This calling to be a part of the LIGHT House ministry was a shock to the community. But Dr. Philgreen knew that God very definitely had been preparing him for this role and called him to help save babies and assist young women in unplanned pregnancies.
He has now been involved in over 1000 deliveries through the LIGHT House ministry. He currently is also a faculty member of the Research Medical Center Family Medicine Residency where he has the daily opportunity to influence young physicians in training as well as continuing to do what he loves—deliver babies and help young women at a crisis point in their lives.
Dr. Philgreen is married to Martha, his sweetheart now for over 42 years. They have 5 children and seven grandchildren. They are active in their church in music, small group teaching, and in marriage mentoring. Dr. Philgreen says he plans to continue serving the LIGHT House as long as God gives him good health and energy.
